Transferring to Kansai University

(English follows)

Mt. Hehuan in Taiwan, Autumn 2018

When the world is still in the grip of the Covid-19 pandemic, and a new war has broken out, I have something personal to tell you that is important to me.

I will be leaving the University of Tokyo at the end of March 2022 and transferring to Kansai University (Faculty of Sociology, Department of Media Studies) in Osaka from April 1.

I have survived at Hongo campus 32 years since I became an assistant at the Institute of Journalism and Communication Studies in 1989 and 35 years since I became a graduate student. Fabulous colleagues and delightful students have made my academic life truly adventurous and playful during this time.

I’ve done all sorts of things – workshops that were too sharp and no one came, books that I couldn’t write, lectures that I put too much energy into and ran overtime, presentations in English that I had to mime because I had too little vocabulary – but they were all invaluable experiences.

Well, I did anything wrong at Hongo or felt uncomfortable there at all. In April last year, my friend Yuhei Yamauchi became the director of the III, and the atmosphere has become heart-warming.

However, I will soon be 59 years old, and I want to do something new in a new place. That idea came to me during the calm reflexive life under the Covid-19. And there is no better time than now to do things with enough energy and stamina to get to the next place. That’s what my “GHOST whispered,” to me (see “Ghost in the Shell”).

The timing of the appointment coincided with the retirement of a professor who was a close friend of mine at Kansai University, which took place in the first half of last year. He said to me, “Shin, You want to go to the after-party early before you get drunk.”
I think that’s very apt.

I have rented an old but spacious apartment near the university; I keep my house in Chiba; sometimes, I enjoy the natural life at Mt. Tsukuba. This year I plan to build a hut.

Soon I’ll be creating an organisation that expands on 5: Designing Media Ecology, working on new literacy research, exploring areas such as multispecies media studies, and writing books.

I want to thank everyone who has helped me so far.
And keep in touch, please.

Most warmly,
Shin
